Playing online with friends from the same Platform or across multiple Platforms like Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games and of course, the Xbox App on PC - all requires a background service to allow so much connectivity.
That's what EOS is here for.
EOS (Epic Online Services) is a system within the Unreal Engine which allows Cross-Platform Multiplayer connectivity. This is the service that allows Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap to connect Players to other Players, regardless of their Platform!
Do I need to install another App to make this work?
No.
EOS is a background service built into the Unreal Engine that allows for connectivity between Players. There's no additional Apps needed to play Deathtrap online.
Besides having an active internet connection and owning the game, there's nothing else you need to do to play online.
Do I need an Epic Account to play online?
No.
The option to link your Steam and Epic Account is available if you would like to access more of your friends on your Epic Games Friends List, but this is not required to play online.

If you don't want to link your account, you don't have to. This is simply an option available to Players if they want it! By default, the link is set to 'Off' so no one will be forced into linking their accounts.
